Tattoo Aftercare Procedure:
By following these aftercare procedures, you'll promote proper healing and ensure your tattoo looks its best for years to come.
Dry Heal Method
Initial Care: After 2-4 hours, carefully remove the bandage. Wash the tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap, using your fingertips. This helps remove plasma and ink residue that can cause scabbing. Gently pat dry with a clean paper towel, avoiding any rubbing motion. Allow the tattoo to breathe; do not rebandage it.
Healing Process: Over the next few days, keep the tattoo clean and dry. Refrain from applying any ointments, creams, or lotions, as this can trap moisture and cause scabs to soften prematurely, potentially leading to ink loss. Let your tattoo air dry completely before covering it with loose clothing.
Protection: For the first 2 weeks, avoid direct sunlight, swimming, and activities that cause excessive sweating, as these can introduce bacteria and slow down healing. Wear loose, breathable clothing to minimize irritation and allow airflow.
What to do if:
Excessive Scabbing: If you notice thick or excessive scabs forming, it may indicate that the tattoo is drying out too much. You can lightly dampen the area with a clean, damp cloth, but avoid any heavy moisture.
Tight Skin: If the skin around the tattoo feels tight, ensure you're drinking enough water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside.
Itching: To relieve itching, gently tap the area or apply a cool compress. Avoid scratching at all costs.
Tips:
Don’t Pick Scabs: Let any scabs fall off naturally to prevent scarring.
Airflow: Sleep in a position that doesn’t put pressure on the tattoo to avoid sticking to bedding.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support your skin’s natural healing process.
Wet Heal Method
Initial Application: After your tattoo is complete, the artist will apply a second skin bandage. Leave this bandage on for 24-48 hours, depending on your artist's recommendation. The bandage will collect excess plasma, ink, and lymph fluid, which helps prevent scabbing. The bandage is waterproof, so you can shower during this period, but avoid soaking it in baths or swimming pools.
Bandage Removal: After the recommended time, gently remove the bandage in a warm shower. The warmth helps to soften the adhesive, making it easier to peel off without damaging the tattoo. Wash the tattoo with mild, fragrance-free soap, and gently pat it dry with a clean paper towel.
Reapplication or Moisturization: Depending on your healing progress, you can either apply a new second skin bandage for an additional 3-5 days or begin using a thin layer of tattoo aftercare lotion to keep the area moisturized. The second skin should stay on as long as possible, but if it starts to peel or wrinkle, it’s time to remove it.
What to do if:
Adhesive Sensitivity: If you experience redness or irritation around the edges of the bandage, it could be an adhesive reaction. Switch to an alternative aftercare method if irritation persists.
Fluid Buildup: If you notice a lot of fluid under the bandage, it’s best to remove it, clean the tattoo, and either reapply a new bandage or switch to a wet healing lotion.
Wrinkling or Peeling: If the bandage starts to peel off prematurely, trim the edges with sanitized scissors to prevent it from catching on clothing.
Tips:
Proper Removal: Always remove the bandage slowly in the shower to avoid pulling off scabs or damaging the tattoo.
Hygiene First: Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the tattoo or applying any products.
Monitor Moisture Levels: Ensure the tattoo is not overly moisturized or too dry under the bandage.
